About Fats, Oils and Grease (FOG)
FOG is one of the leading causes of sewage backups and overflows, leading to costly cleanup costs and environmental problems impacting both residential homes and commercial businesses. Implementing FOG Best Management Practices (BMPs) reduces or eliminates the likelihood of issues in the City’s sewer lines, thereby, safeguarding businesses and homes from the impact of sewage backups and overflows.
Common sources of fats, oils and grease:
- Butter
- Cooking Oil
- Grease
- Food scraps
- Lard
- Margarine
- Meat scraps
- Shortening
For residential buildings, the prevention of fats, oils and grease is up to the individual. Some of the BMPs to safeguard against the buildup of FOG are as follows:
- Recycle waste cooking oil. Never pour oil down sinks or drains.
- “Dry Wipe” pots, pans and dishware prior to washing.
- Dispose of food waste by recycling and/or solid waste removal.
Residential Fats, Oils and Grease Information
