CHARLOTTE – The N. C. Department of Transportation invites the public to attend a meeting to learn more about a proposed project to improve the safety of Jackson Park Road and Lane Street between Main Street and Interstate 85 in Kannapolis.

The open house meeting will begin at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 4, at Kannapolis City Hall, 401 Laureate Way. Department staff will be available to answer questions and receive comments until 8 p.m. There will be no formal presentation. Attendees will also have the opportunity to submit written comments and questions.

A safety study identified five locations in the 3.1-mile corridor with a high number of crashes. In total, 228 crashes, including one fatality and six disabling injuries, occurred within the five-year study period. A similar improvement project on Cabarrus Avenue in Concord reduced crashes by 51% in the first three years.

The proposed project would add traffic signals at the intersections of Lane Street and China Grove Road and Lane Street and Ruth Avenue. In addition, it would convert Jackson Park Road and Lane Street from a four-lane undivided roadway to a three-lane roadway with bicycle lanes.
