East First Street Bridge in Kannapolis Closed until Early December

Critical Repairs Underway to Keep the Structure Safe

CHARLOTTE – Officials with the N.C. Department of Transportation announced today that the critical repairs underway on the East First Street bridge over U.S. 29 (Cannon Boulevard) in Kannapolis should be completed by early December. Though the structure is scheduled to be replaced in 2019, recent maintenance work revealed the need to add support to the bridge immediately.
Message signs are in place to direct motorists to use Jackson Park Road and North Main Street to reach East First Street.
The necessary work consists of two stages. First, crews must remove lead paint and corrosion. Due to the environmental hazards of lead paint and to ensure proper repairs, each step of this work must be documented. Next, crews will add support plates and beam stiffeners to compromised beams. These repairs are intended to keep the bridge open until its scheduled replacement.
