As work continues on the Interstate 85 widening project in Cabarrus County, motorists will begin to notice new, temporary traffic patterns in place along the interstate and its interchange with U.S. 29/601. The traffic shifts will allow crews to focus on interchange work and construction in the median.

On Wednesday, Sept. 9, at 9 p.m., crews will begin shifting traffic onto a temporary alignment on the U.S. 29/601 interchange. The work will continue until 6 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10. Work on the shift will resume on Friday, Sept. 11, at 9 p.m. and continue until Saturday, Sept. 12, at 6 a.m.

Once the temporary alignment is in place on the interchange, there will be two new temporary signalized intersections to manage traffic getting on and off I-85 at the U.S. 29/601 Interchange. Three temporary ramps will be in place at the interchange to direct motorists to their destinations:

• Motorists traveling north on I-85 will use a new temporary ramp (Ramp C) to access U.S. 29/601 North and South;
• Motorists traveling North and South on U.S. 29/601 will use a new temporary ramp (Ramp B) to access I-85 South; and
• Motorists traveling north and south on U.S. 29/601 will use a new temporary ramp (Ramp D) to access I-85 North.
On Sunday, Sept. 13, beginning at 9 p.m., crews will place traffic on a temporary alignment on I-85 North between Exit 58 (U.S. 29/601) and Exit 60 (Dale Earnhardt Boulevard). Work will continue until Monday, Sept. 14, at 6 a.m. and then resume Monday at 9 p.m. until 6 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 15. This shift will allow for construction of the new roadway within the existing median.

Crews will then shift traffic on I-85 South in the same area, working Tuesday, Sept. 15, from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept 16, and again Wednesday night from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. the next day.

Motorists are urged to stay alert and pay attention when traveling through the work zone during the traffic shifts, since construction personnel and equipment will be on site.
