City Issues State of Emergency Declaration > City of Kannapolis | City of Kannapolis

News Articles

City of Kannapolis officials have been closely monitoring Hurricane Florence. Based on the most recent weather forecasts we expect to receive significant rainfall and wind gusts over the duration of the event. We will continue to watch the hurricane’s path closely as this forecast could change.

The City has issued the State of Emergency declaration this afternoon, in advance of any inclement weather, because the declaration allows the City to mobilize emergency management resources in the event they are needed. If the City were to have negative impacts from the storm, having this declaration in place, would allow the City to apply for federal reimbursement for monies spent in responding to it.

Current weather models predict heavy rain and wind across our area. Emergency Management officials urge residents to prepare for widespread flooding and high-impact winds, which have the potential to impact travel and may lead to power outages.

Police and fire staff are ready to respond to any emergencies if the need arises. The public should call 704-920-4200 for all NON-EMERGENCIES. Please help us by only calling 911 if you have an EMERGENCY.

We are also in touch with county and state officials and will be ready to request assistance and various other resources if necessary. We ask that you pay attention to official state/federal sources for current information.

We have a website for all Hurricane Florence related information: www.kannapolisnc.gov/readykannapolis. You will find some of the most frequently asked questions, resources and general information you may need in relation to bad weather preparedness. We will update this page as necessary.

The City uses a variety of other information outlets to disseminate information including:
• Facebook (City Page and 911 Page), Twitter, Instagram, Next Door, LinkedIn
• Local newspaper, radio, television and magazine outlets.
• City Email Newsletter – subscribe by going to this link: www.kannapolisnc.gov/Enews-Emergency-Alerts
• In emergencies we use Blackboard Connect – a Reverse 911 system. If you have not done so sign up for this system: http://www.kannapolisnc.gov/Enews-Emergency-Alerts
