The U.S. Postal Service and the City of Kannapolis now recognizes “Kannapolis” as the city name in your address. Your street address and zip code will remain the same. You should address mail using the same street and zip code number as you currently do.
All official mail and addressing software systems will reflect this change which is effective immediately.
Your business, home or entity has always been located in the city limits of Kannapolis if you live in one of the following zip codes. The City of Kannapolis encompasses eight postal zip codes: 28036, 28027, 28025, 28083, 28023, 28078, 28081 and 28088 and has the unique designation of being in two counties (Cabarrus and Rowan). Over the years, this has caused confusion as people move here, operate businesses, use GPS systems and when people call 911 for emergencies.
We work diligently to recruit businesses and jobs to our city. Many businesses tell us that the zip code issue impacts them from a logistic and delivery standpoint, which can bear a financial burden to their business. This issue has also caused confusion on birth and death certificates and other legal documents. The City’s primary designated employment, commercial and residential growth areas are all located in non-Kannapolis zip code areas. In fact, 48 percent of the city’s population and over 80% of the city’s largest businesses are in non-Kannapolis zip codes.
Thus, we have worked with the U.S. Postal Service and U.S. Congress to resolve the issues that are a result of the different designated city zip codes in Kannapolis.
All properties located in the City of Kannapolis will now be designated as Kannapolis. Again, your street address and zip code will remain the same. You should address mail using the same street and zip code number as you currently do. You have the option of using “Kannapolis” as the city in your address. All new addresses that are assigned to new developed properties will automatically be assigned as a Kannapolis address.
How will this impact you and your business/institution/home?
Your street name and zip code number will remain the same. You should address mail using the same street and zip code number as you currently do. When you list your city in your address, we encourage you to use “Kannapolis” or you may continue to use your current one. The U.S. Post Office will deliver it regardless of what city name you use. The zip code number and the street address are what is necessary for your mail and packages to be delivered.
When is this effective?
Immediately. The U.S. Post Office has already made this change in their systems. Emergency management, mapping programs such as Google Maps, and others are being updated. Utility companies such as Dominion Energy, Duke Energy are also making the change in their systems.
Do I need to do an official change of address with the U.S. Post Office or others?
No. The U.S. Post Office and others have already made the change in their files. They will continue to deliver your mail and packages. A change of address with the U.S. Post Office is not necessary. You are welcome to make the change with other vendors and people who use your address, as well as on your website, social media and other items listing your address.
