Safe Streets Initiative

In September 2023, the US Department of Transportation awarded the City of Kannapolis a grant to prepare a comprehensive safety action plan. The grant was awarded under the Safe Streets and Roads for All Grant program.

The City selected DRMP, Inc. to assist with the preparation of the Safety Action Plan. In May 2024, the City and DRMP began work on the study.

About Safe Streets for All

The November 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law established the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant program with $5 billion in funding over five years. The goal of the SS4A program is to improve roadway safety and significantly reduce or eliminate roadway fatalities and serious injuries for all roadway users, including pedestrians, bicyclists, public transportation users, and motorists. The SS4A grant program provides grants to local, regional, and tribal governments for planning and implementation of programs and projects to prevent fatalities and serious injuries on roadways.

Additional information regarding the SS4A program may be found on the Safe Streets and Roads for All Fact Sheet available from the US Department of Transportation website:

Kannapolis Safety Action Plan

The Kannapolis Safety Action Plan will make safety improvement recommendations to reduce the number of fatalities and serious injuries on roadways within Kannapolis. The study will analyze crash history and determine intersections or roadway segments within the City in need of safety improvements and develop concepts for those improvements.

The study will involve the following steps:

•    Preliminary Data Collection (May-July 2024)
•    Establish Vision and Goals (July 2024)
•    Identification of Detailed Study Areas (June-August 2024)
•    Detailed Data Collection/Analysis (October-December 2024)
•    Safety Improvement Prioritization (December 2024-January 2025)
•    Countermeasure Identification (February-March 2025)
•    Concept Development/Cost Estimates (May-July 2025)
•    Safety Action Plan Report Preparation (September-October 2025)

Vision, Mission, and Goals

A Vision Statement, Mission Statement, and Goals have been developed for the Kannapolis Safety Action Plan. These statements will help guide the development of the plan.

Kannapolis Safety Action Plan Vision Statement

The Kannapolis Safety Action Plan envisions:

No transportation-related fatalities or serious injuries on streets and roadways within the City of Kannapolis by the Year 2050.

Kannapolis Safety Action Plan Mission Statement

The mission of the Kannapolis Safety Action Plan is to:

Implement a collaborative data-driven approach to reduce and prevent fatalities and serious injuries on all streets and roadways within the City of Kannapolis by teaming with transportation professionals, law enforcement, emergency responders, and the public.

Kannapolis Safety Action Plan Goals

Three measurable goals have been identified for the Kannapolis Safety Action Plan:

  • Identify the five intersections or roadway segments within the City of Kannapolis with the highest fatal or serious injury crashes.
  • Develop countermeasures, conceptual designs, and cost estimates for projects to eliminate fatal and serious injuries at the identified locations.
  • Obtain funding for these projects.

How You Can Help

As stated above, teaming with the public to reduce and prevent fatalities and serious injuries is a part of the mission of the Kannapolis Safety Action Plan. One way you can help is by completing this survey. Your input will help us as we seek to identify the intersections or roadway segments within Kannapolis most in need of safety improvements.
